Reggio in America

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in America sets high standards for preschool education and therefore recognizes the Reggio-Inspired approach as exemplary education. In 2002 the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance was formed.  The NAEYC in America says, “The Reggio Approach to childcare and education is exemplary.”

The Reggio Emilia approach is a byproduct of a carefully articulated and collaborative approach to the care and education of young children. Reggio Emilia’s approach to childcare and education far exceeds from other childcare and education, both inside and outside of Italy, and attracts worldwide attention. There is emphasis on children’s symbolic languages in the context of a project-based curriculum. This feature has been well documented in two traveling exhibitions.

In America, we have been fascinated with the experiences of the city of Reggio Emilia and have taken to the “Reggio Emilia Approach”. We have taken the approach and applied it to our environments. The Reggio-Inspired” approach is the new curriculum model of excellence.
